2010 VOTE

The Library's proposition to increase funding passed 238 to 144 on Tuesday, May 4th.

$16,000 of the $43,000 increase will be used to open the Library for 5 hours on Mondays starting in July. $3,000 will restore cuts made to the Books and Materials line in the 2009-10 budget. $12,500 will replace revenue lost in state aid and decreases in donations. The remaining funds will be used to update technology, assist with maintenance and repairs of the building and address inflationary costs.

Voters also elected Dave Fisher and Dan Towne, Jr. to 5 year terms as Trustees.

The Library would like to thank everyone who participated in the election. Voter turn out was up 900% over previous years. It is important that voters are given the opportunity to have a say in the future of Library service in our community.

Newly elected trustees

David Fisher
David was born and raised in Gloversville and was graduated from Gloversville High School. After being awarded a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MA from Brown University, he entered the Air Force, serving four years on active duty including a one-year tour in Vietnam. Upon release from active duty, he remained active in the Air Force Reserve for 24 years.

In 1970 he and his wife returned to Gloversville where they both became teachers in the Gloversville School District. Currently retired, David worked at Gloversville High School for 35 years serving as a teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal. He has been active in several community organizations including the Boy Scouts and Big brothers/Big Sisters and he is currently a Trustee of both the Gloversville Public Library and his church.

Daniel Towne
My name is Daniel Towne Jr. and it is an honor to seek a nomination as a candidate for the Board of Trustees of the Gloversville Public Library.

I have been a resident of the city for 13 years. I was born in Gloversville and lived here as a young child until my family moved to Mayfield in the mid-1970's. Members of my family have lived and worked in Gloversville for generations. Several of my family members still live in the city. My wife and I have two daughters. One attends Gloversville Middle School and the other attends Gloversville High School.

I have been a professional librarian since 2004. Currently, I am the Systems and Electronic Services Librarian at the Evan Library at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. I understand how important a library is in the education of both students and community members.

The library's role in any community is a dynamic one. Our library, in our city, is no different. The library is a place for community members to seek information and to engage with other community members. The library is also a place for patrons to learn new skills and to explore local history. Our community and our library both have rich histories. Those histories can be instrumental in ensuring bright futures - for the library, for the people of Gloversville, and by extension for the city itself.

I am interested in serving as a Trustee of our library because I believe that it is a vital institution in our community. I would like to help shape the future of our library and to help shape the programs and services that our library offers to fellow citizens of the city of Gloversville.

Respectfully submitted,
Daniel R. Town, Jr.

Budget Information

When the Gloversville Public Library was formed in 2005, its creation included a tax levy of $198,200 payable by the property owners of the new library's chartered service area. Those borders are contiguous with those of the Gloversville Enlarged School District.

The levy has remained the same since 2005, but expenses have risen and in order to meet the wants and needs of the community, including increasing hours, the Board of Trustees has developed a budget which requests an increase of $43,000.

This Information Sheet will help explain the levy increase and a public hearing on the Library's budget will be held on Tuesday, April 27th at 6 pm at the Library. Library looks to increase hours...
